Pet X-Ray (Digital Radiography)

X-rays produce images of dense structures such as bones and joints. They are the primary tool for identifying fractures, bone abnormalities, joint disease, lung conditions, heart size, and foreign objects that a pet may have swallowed. Digital X-rays produce high-resolution images in seconds with minimal radiation exposure.

Pet Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves — not radiation — to create real-time images of soft tissues and internal organs. It is particularly useful for examining the liver, kidneys, bladder, spleen, heart, and reproductive organs. Ultrasound is also the primary tool for pregnancy monitoring and can help guide biopsies or fluid drainage.

Your veterinarian will recommend the imaging modality most appropriate for your pet's symptoms and condition. In some cases, both X-ray and ultrasound may be used together for a comprehensive assessment.

When Does Your Pet Need Diagnostic Imaging?

What Happens During a Pet X-Ray or Ultrasound at Vets Fur Pets?

1. Assessment — Your veterinarian reviews your pet's symptoms and recommends the appropriate imaging.
2. Positioning — Your pet is gently positioned for the scan. Most pets tolerate this well without sedation.
3. Image capture — Digital images are captured quickly, with minimal discomfort and very low radiation exposure (X-ray) or none at all (ultrasound).
4. Immediate review — Results are typically available during the same visit. Your vet reviews the images and explains the findings to you.
5. Treatment plan — Based on the diagnostic findings, your vet recommends next steps — which may include medication, further testing, or referral for surgery.
